my roommate is an animal lover, through and through. i didn't grow up around animals, the token dog i had was a german shepard in africa and she was a guard dog, pretty to look at but not so much to play with. i'm actually quite scared of animals, big or small, cuddly or not. i am drawn to PBS and Discovery channels for their nature documentaries. does that count?

recently, we went to the Baltimore Zoo. she needed her animal fix. since moving in with me 8 weeks ago and realizing that the only pet i have is a cactus plant that i ignore, she's been without. poor dear.

they're not deer. they're something that starts with an "S" and originate from africa. i kept yelling out "Bambi!" tho.

this was also part of the "africa trail". now that i think about it, the Baltimore Zoo has a very good african section.

oh, how i love giraffes. the smallest one kept following the biggest one around. it was adorable. i think i stood there for a good 10 minutes, just gawking at them.

and then the biggest of them all: the elephants. this one was alone, seperate from the other two females. i don't know why. my only criticism of this zoo is that the placards didn't provide much information about the animals beyond what the species were. i wanted to know the names, how they came to the zoo, what their habits were etc. *that* interests me. the Zoo in DC is a bit better, with even more animals. this time around, the polar bears were resting in the shade, the lions weren't doing much and i couldn't find one of the cheetahs.

out on my fire escape my roommate spotted a mama bird who created a nest out of an old flower pot.

she's guarding two eggs.

so my roommate and i will guard over her until her babies hatch.

we've named her Guadalupe.

we're going to be aunts and we love them already!

spent a long weekend in Puerto Rico with jason. during the walk to the beach, we passed a couple. i observed them for a moment. they were oblivious to the lovely water, the palm trees shading them, to people milling about. they were too busy being in love.

this was outside the door of my building the other day. the roses a dark stained red-black, the water gone violet. i was in a rush and did not pause. the next morning, they were still there. the note read: "thinking of you. i guess you aren't anymore!"

i find that nowadays i wake up tired, like i haven't gotten enough sleep. because i really haven't gotten enough sleep. my mornings are spent lethargic, eyes clouded over until the jolt of caffeine kicks in. it never does, at least not during the daylight hours. i come home and later into the evening the pricklings of sleep abate and i toss and turn in my bed, waiting for slumber. only to have the cycle start again and i am back to being torpid, mind blowingly ... tired. and the grey mornings of late winter does not help.

spring is finally around the corner. march is over halfway over already. i am hopeful. just for the sunshine and warmth. for the country to claw our way out of this economic slump. march madness starts today! (my alma mater made it to the dance and tho they probably will not advance beyond the first round, i really am excited for the Highlanders!)

and that these braces will make my teeth straighter much faster than anticipated and they'll come out sooner. :)

one of baltimore's mottos is Believe. this word is everywhere. in a time like now it gives one Hope. one day while pumping gas during my lunch break, i looked up and saw this fence. and even tho i was starving and all i had was leftover waiting for me back at the office, this image made me feel better.

i seriously love this parking lot. it's a converted warehouse. the ground is dirty and there are piles of drift wood. the glass windows are tall and high up, there are some even broken. it's a haven for picturing taking, in the morning or evening. i can't wait for the weather to warm up so i can stand to be outside snapping away.

i'm not so tired of taking pictures every morning, between the hours of 7 to 10am, but i am tired of having to post it on this blog. i'm up in arms as to what kind of photography blog i want to do. like a diary? one that chronicles my everyday life? no i already offer alot of myself in my craft/food blog. there is only so much of my life i can put on display. so for now, i will just post random finds that i capture and maybe i'll have sage words of wisdom. or not.

i'll still post my span of 3 hours pictures on my flickr page.

i can't recall all the things i did: blurred a bit, highlighted the lovely green, blurred and darkened the background and i discovered a polaroid effect that i'm in love with. i also added a mirrored frame.

it was freezing last week, the coldest it's been in the six years i've lived in baltimore, dipping below 0. it was not nice. today was cold but it reached to the upper 30s. and yet it snowed. and stuck.

i caught these from a meeting room in the office. the building we're in is an old renovated warehouse that has gorgeous windows.

i just figured out how to do layering of textures on picnik so i was playing around with that. nothing major today. softened it a bit, cropped, highlighted the color of the leaves in her hand.

it's been a distressing day for me. i voted in my first election this morning. but i also had my camera stolen. it's just a point and shoot but it was MY point and shoot, my first one that jab gave me for my last bday. i am so bummed. i've been working hard lately to save up for a dslr but now i don't even have a camera of my own to play with at all. i try to remember that maybe this person needs it more than i do but i can't help but hope karma kicks him in the ass sooner than later.

this week's What's your Play? picture comes from Laura. It's from the botanical gardens in Montreal.

initially i was going to see if i could highlight more of the greenery and not so much the scary looking skull thing in the middle. that wasn't possible since it is th focal point of the pic. i softened the edges a bit and accidentally clicked on the invert colors button and got this. i dug it so i kept it.

i was so in love with this week's What's Your Play picture, i played with it twice. i couldn't decide what tone to go for.

i went dark here. i wanted the leaf to stand out. brought the exposure down, added a boost of color and a frame ...

i went romantic here, softening the edges, blurring everything except for the leaf.

anyway, please don't forget to do something about your boobies, whether it be participate in a walk, another walk, the bake off or feeling yourself up for any potential bumps.

my cousin patrick submitted this week's what's your play? i think he went to some wedding up north but you'da thunk it was in ireland for the green grass and rainbow. at least that's what i thought. anyway, i personally think the picture is perfect as is and so playing with it was kinda hard. i rotated it just a smidge, added some color tint to give it a bit more of an Autumn feel to it. i also cropped it to bring the cows in closer.

this cooler weather is not inspiring me. i know the Fall Season is one that brings in crisper air, pretty Reds and Oranges and all that stuff. it doesn't inspire me. it just makes me want to put on socks, hide under my covers and wait til Spring. that doesn't make for much inclination to snap pictures. i'll be back eventually. next week maybe. see you then. but you can catch me on my main blog, Angry Asian Creations.

it's a pretty bridge but when i first saw it it reminded me of the Lord of the Rings. yes, i'm a nerd. but it brought to mind Frodo and his 3 hobbit companions going off to meet Gandalf at the Prancing Pony in Bree. they were chased by a dark rider and any scene with this rider in it, the picture would go almost black and the zoom focus would get all weird.

so i did that to this week's what's your play picture. i darkened it a smidge, added a focal zoom, slight boost of color and cross processing.
